Before I forget. . . Dad, do you have contact with people that you taught on you mission? I have so many questions for you and Barrett when I have the chance to ask them all! haha. Hales and Heid thanks for the pictures! Wow. . . first run on the lake already . . that just made my stomach rumbly . . . funny that you mentioned J-dawgs Hales. . . just yesterday I was trying to explain to Elder Redd what a J-dawg is. . . that is a toughy. What Day is Fathers day? It is different here in Brasil and I don't what to miss it. . . if I miss it in the e-mail you can be sure that I will be sending by snail-mail.
To all -
So . . . this week we got dragged into a terrible situation of accepting food and wasting time at a members house. Right when we wanted to leave they told us they were making some food and it would be quick. In the end, we were going crazy because of the helpless situation and we both ended up eating a large plate of sardine stew. . . it wasn't bad in all reality . . I just wasnt really hungry hahaha. They sent us home with a ton of lemons, bananas, etc.
This morning on Pday we went with the whole zone to a factory of the best soda in the world, that doesn't exist in the states yet . . . but they have the goal to be there before 2026! It is called Cajuina. . . from the SÃO GERALDO (saint jerold ; ) ) company. It was fun trip and the elders enjoyed the free soda at the end. . . I sent a pic : )
Other sidenote. . I found out this week that Jim Carrey is a member of the church . . What?! I had no idea haha. Someday he'll wake up to a tough reality right? haha.
About the week...we had a fallen baptism last night that was a huge headache, looking for someone who wasn't home and letting people down that were there waiting. . . well this week we should be able to close on some great baptisms that have taken a while. Those that take the longest are often the ones that stay strong! President Batt will be ending his mission in 7 days and we will be getting a new mission president who will be brazilian this time! That'll will be an interesting change! President Batt is an awesome man (who we noticed never hugs his missionaries haha) who has changed this mission greatly and, for those who observed him, taught us many things through his example and his many words of wisdom. One thing that shows his humility and will always stick with me was when he told us... if you do anything when you get back, or make any promise with God. . .make the promise to be 100 percent on your visits. You family will be blessed by your example, you will grow, and others will be blessed. His theory seemed to simple be. . . Be good, obedient, do more than you did yesterday, work hard, be blessed. . . He always made it seem so simple to be a great member and happy person. . which is it!
Last thought . . Alma 39:10 . . . Alma leaving some words of wisdom for Coriantumr. He teaches something that I wish I would have learned a lot earlier in my life! We have so much to learn from our parents and our siblings. I am trully embarassed for the years I spent being a hot-headed adolescent losing many chances to strengthen my family relationships that will be my eternal ones. I don't know when I finally woke up, but I know that from that day forward I have learned so much and made friendships that mean the world to me! I thank my parents for giving me every chance possible and my brothers and sisters for being stellar examples, love you all! I send my thanks also to all of my friends who have shown me how to love your family and siblings!
Abraços e beijos to all . . . haha. -Elder Johnson

To all-
So we were, and will be again today, the first missionaries to step foot in a city here called OLD MISSION. We are headed out there again and it'll be fun to see the crazy looks we'll get haha. Success of the week: We have the goal for each companionship in the zone to 'adopt' an innactive man and try to get him re-activated. The man we are accompanying was at church Sunday and I really think he was just lacking a simple visit and the last little boost to get him back. He left for a while because he was never able to stop drinking, but he will do it this time and we are excited about hit potential to change the branch here.
I loved Alma 29: 14-end. . . How Alma didn't get as excited for his own success as he did for the success of his brethren. That is truly charity in its purest form! Wishing the best for all and rejoicing in the success of others. If everyone had the same attitude this world would be translated! I spoke in church yesterday, and blessed the sacrament again . . . that is what happens in a branch of 30 active people and 6 missionaries. . . almost the only men. We love it here and we have a great time together. I plan on flying my kite today that I made last p-day . . I am really excited : )
The other night we were teaching and there was a power outage. We were able to continue in the dark and we were even able to take the coffee out of two houses so that a few families could start obeying the word of wisdom. As we left into the street in the dark, I couldn't believe the beautiful sky that I saw above me. I finally understand the twinkle twinkle little star song. haha. The stars were literally twinkling and SO bright. Well, being the me that I am, I got thinking. . . And I realized that I never would have seen that if the lights of the world, the false lights that are only good for a certain amount of time and will one day burn out, had not gone out. We have to seperate ourselves from the world and we can't get accustomed to the lower level of light that the world offers. Spiritually and materially speaking. As president Batt said. The world WILL GET WORSE. We must be separated, but we also have to make sure that we aren't slowly drifting with the world as well. So as to be be today where the world was 10 years ago. Stand alone in the right!
We have an investigator that is firm as can be, but because of her husband won't be baptized. She will be a firm church-goer forever but I don't know i she will ever be able to be baptized. Miracles are happening. . . Maybe not how we want, but they are! Love you all muito.
-Elder Johnson
PS. . . Weird englis word of the week. FRECKLE. Say that one outloud 20 times!

Our whole zone went to zone conference this week! Doesn't sound very impressive but it is : ) . 20 missionaries, 10 hour busride, and some great spirit-guided trainings. One of my favorite things that I heard at conference is something that can be applied to all of our callings in the church. Elder Cassimiro said, "we are not fulfilling our purpose leaving the house, walking around and visiting people." But aren't we here to teach? The point was that we have to be maintaining the same vision that the godhead has and working with the same love that the have as well. We have to be trully inviting all to come unto christ and just by making a visit and teaching a lesson that doesn't always get done. Why are we doing what we are doing and are we really focused on the main purpose or just going through the motions? Loved that thought!
We visited a few people that I baptized in Fortaleza as well! Haha the mother pretty much offered us her kitchen! She had made something called feijoada . . which is like a black bean stew. . . pretty good. But I wasnt hungry haha. All that was left on the plate were a few bones covered in fat and she was still saying "You guys are going to eat ALL of that! Pick it up and eat it!" . . so there I went with no help from the elder that was with me . . . stripping these bones of all the edible substances . . yes, all the fat as well . . don't gag ; ) haha. It was so fun to see them all!
If your happy and you know it, and your face'll surely show it . . . - Proverbs 15:13. A cool scripture I heard this week.
I am reviewing Mosiah and I loved chapted 4 that I read. In vs. 11 he gives us what I call King Benjamin's formula. He tells us what we must do and then he tells us what the results will be in the following verses. We must humble ourselves with the deepest humility. Each day on the mission I realized how involved God is in our lives and far I have to go. The mission is really a great time to see where we are lacking. . . but everyday can be and is another chance to ask ourselves those same questions 'where am I weakest, what am I lacking, what can I change?' (as well as Mosiah 2:41).
It was like christmas when I spent an hour (due to the zone conference) in the mission office just downloadig conference talks. Now we are far away from the mission office but I have 50 + awesome conference talks to listen to! If you haven't checked the church website out lately, give it a look-sy . . . it is a playground of uplifting ....ness!
I love you all. . . each and everyone. No, but seriously.

So we got our letters last week! With them came my package including some chocolate(eaten), two shirts, a bunch of letters(already been read), a pad of paper (already being used), more pens, and a sweet magnet set! Wow that magnet set is really a hit in our house! Holy macarole! I have also taken it to a few peoples houses and it always seems to capture everyone! haha Thanks for all of the letters and Heidi Thanks for the pictures as well! Love to each and everyone... I hope everyone is happy and healthy . . -Elder Johnson

So we had district conference in Juazeiro this week and I was able to see pretty much everyone from my first area where I spent 6 months! It is crazy how many people are now pregnant and also how big the members kids are. Mom and Dad I can't wait to visit that little branch with you two : ). I am now with Elder Lima as I said. He was actually born in this city! Stayed here until he was 5 and has lived in São Paulo ever since then. He is a stud and a super humble down to earth guy. He also speaks english pretty well . . he said I talk fast, I don't agree! haha. He is crazy scared of frogs and stayed in the bathroom standing on the toilet for 10 minutes the other day thinking there was a frog on the floor (our bathroom doesn't have lights so he didn't know). Haha He is a stellar kid. OH. . . he is from a city called "Bom Jesus dos Perdões" - or "Good Jesus of the pardons" . . . a small city in he interior of São Paulo. The first Missionary from his ward was his sister and he is the second!
We didn't have any baptisms but we are working with some great people. I would be fine to spend this whole transfer looking just to find ONE good man that could change the future of this branch and be a worthy prieshood holder. We are doing our best, pray for the men in Barbalha! Heading out to the disrict conference we took some streets that were seriously in the middle of NOWHERE . . . we totally went through a river on the bus and almost got stuck in sand as well . . I was lovin it up the whole time, gotta love adventures and new experiences.
There is a HUGE party going on down here called the 'Pau Da Bandeira.' You guys should throw that into google and see what comes up, I would be interested to know. They have the tradition of cutting down a huge tree and carrying it from one city to another (all while drinking a ton). When it gets to the final destination they put it in the ground and there is a myth that the wood from the tree brings luck in getting married. . . so the women go crazy trying to get past the men that are carrying the tree to tree and touch it or get a piece. There were fireworks going off the whole night two days ago. . . the ONLY night that I have been sick on my whole mission, who perfect! When I say sick I just mean runny/stuffy nose and some sneezing but still. . . that is no fun! I am super gladto have a day of rest today!
Well, I love you all, and I wish I could express my love for the mission to each and everyone of you. I read Alma 26 this week and I fell in love with it. After many trials and difficulties Amon is trying to express his joy in seeing the conversion of so many people. In vs. 16 I would like to repeat his words as mine in saying that it just cannot be expressed in words. This is my life, this is my joy! What a great man he was. I love you all . . if you have time, give that chapter a quick read ; )

I believe there is a brithday coming up soon .. . : D I still LOVE my calendar that you guys sent me, thanks so much I use it everyday! Thanks for all of the pictures Hales! I can't believe how beautiful our house is! And my amazing family! That really was so fun. When did you find the time to draw with sidewalk chalk? haha. Love you all dearly! - Elder Johnson ps that picture of mom and dad is SO classic! super fun.

Hello! So I will jump right into some updates of the week. We had 3 baptisms this week, and I just pray that they all stay strong. With the track record of this branch (which has about 60 people at church each sunday 20 of which are taken by us the 6 missionaries) they will be inactive soon. But I will do my best to leave them with good habits and strong testimonies. Sometimes I have the fear of baptizing someone before they really KNOW KNOW KNOW, but you can't wait, we all come to KNOW later on. We just do our best and pray that the Lord might bless them.
I did an interview this week that was a miracle. Someone I had already interviewed but was still drinking coffee and thus couldn't be baptized last week. Anyways... she sat down (a woman of about 45 yrs of age) and the first thing she said was "I'm not going to be baptized, I decided." . . .WOW. This is THE BAPTISMAL INTERVIEW. . . haha I calmly told her that I wasn't going to let her say that cause I knew she was prepared. We said a prayer, had a simple conversation, I bore testimony and felt SO blessed to remember some scriptures that I hadn't read for months and the spirit calmed her heart. She ended up saying, "alright, I'm going to be baptized, that is my final decision, above anything, nothing is going to change my mind!" I wanted to throw my arms up in the sky and say something cheesy like, "THAT'S IT.... YOU GOT IT!!" haha. What a miracle. She was already baptized and her son as well.
Two days ago we went to visit some investigators just to see how they were doing and to confirm the visit to church. They were at home, but they were also having a huge catholic celebration with all of their family. We got invited in and I had a flashback to those parties when you got invited by a friend of a friend of a friend and you know no one and you feel like everyone wnats to know why in the world you are there . . . but as we know "awkward is what you make it" so I talked my way out of the situation...made friends, made contacts, we got soda and cake, and it all turned out peacefully!
Love to all of you. Choose something to get better at this week. Mine is more charity. Sincerely, - Elder Johnson
We are at the 5th week without getting mail out here. . . middle of nowhere!

Hales already came through on the more pictures promise. . .Thanks Hales! I had a wonderful time talking to all of you, sorry about the poor connection in the beginning! . . . I was dying to say so much but it just didnt work to talk fast! Loved hearing all of your voices. . . Missed talking to Juice and Nean, but I love you both alright? ; ) haha. Tell Hallie Belle that I always look forward to her cute songs! I'm glad she has overcome any form of stage fright! I tried to tell Barrett something funny that I realized a few weeks ago but it just didn't work out with a crackling phone. . . so I'll tell you all now. . . The word FLUFF. . . in the sense of 'He fluffed' . . does not really exist. . .there are VERY few people who have heard that. . . thought it was funny . . we would say fluff . . thanks Mom : )
I wanted to explain every happening, every feeling, every situation, all our investigators and evvverything on the phone, but it just would never work, so I will continue with the weekly updates : ) haha
I hope my mother and all of you mothers had a wonderful day! I realized that when I talk to you all, I don't feel like I really have ever been far away . . because you are all so much a part of who I am and what I will be that you are with me 24/7 . . principally my Mom and Dad! Mom I hope you were able to feel my and all of our love for you yesterday on this special day in your honor you deserved every single one of this nice things that were done for and said about you. You will get your Mother's Day card late in the mail . . but it'll come! I love you! -

Hello to all and Happy Mothers Day to any mothers out there. I had a wonderful chat, on the PHONE, with my family yesterday which was just a blast. Slow connection at first but it all went well. I didn't cry and neither did my Mom! . . Hallie Belle sang to me and it was just great to hear everyone.
I heard that Messia's family, if anyone still remembers who he is, was baptized this week and he will be baptized soon! So awesome. I am having the opporunity almost weekly to talk with people that I taught and baptized at the beginning of the mission and it is really a joy to have them tell me "sorry, I have to go, I have to talk at the baptismal service, or 'I would come visit your ward on sunday, but I have to stay at my ward cause I have a calling. . .' " . . I love them all!
My recent favorite scripture is Heleman 3:35. . . it is way cooler in português but it is also pretty great in English. I love that last line . . . in Português, instead of saying "yileding their hearts" it says "delivering their hearts unto god" . . . It is a simple outline of how we can better ourselves!
PICTURES : sweet wall. . . animals in the street . . . A new tie I bought for 3.50! . . . A few shots of my area . . . an artistic scene we created with an old bug that we see everyday...The meatballs we made for lunch . . super good : ) A little girl that got ahold of lipstick. . . I told her she had missed a spot on her cheek, nose, and forehead and so she threw some more on . . . haha so classic!
Have a stellar week! (does stellar have One or two L's?)

To All -
ALRIGHHHTY then! The week was a good one and all is well of course : ) We had the baptism of Isabelly this week, an awesome 11 year old who went to church 4 weeks in a row alone(that includes getting the bus and everything)! There is a rule here on the mission that anyone younger than 15 has to go 4 times or have a family member that is active in order to be baptized. . . so missionaries don't go around baptizing young people who will soon be another inactive member. Anyways, she is a cutie and is truly a bright young girl. She will be a great example to her parents who both drink and wouldn't even go to watch her baptism. punks.
I got a call this week . . from my last comp. He was at Messias' house (the man/family I almost baptized before leaving that area, who was smoking) and he passed the phone over so I could talk to them. They told me that the whole family had made the decision to be baptized and that Messias was done smoking. One more 'full joy' moment. She was going to pass the phone around but they were all crying and no one could talk haha. Love them! What an awesome family they are and will be, wish I could have been there for the baptism!
Like I already said, we live here in a house of 6 missionaries (the only house like that on the mission) and we don't have lunch nor dinner with members. . . So we have to make our own. Last thursday was our day and we left in the morning to buy the stuff. When we came back, the door was locked and we had no way to get in. So what do you do? . . . I started trying to bend our little metal window thingy that we have on the door and saw that it just MIGHT work. I found a rock and stick in the street and using the little muscle I have left and the slighty knowledge I have about the power of leverage. . . I got the gap open wide enough for my comp to throw his arm through the window and open it up. Long story short, we broke into our house, proved that it was possible, and made an . . average lunch. . . haha. It wasn't as tasty as the first I'll say that much!
We are excited about the work.... juicing our minds of every idea we might have to get and keep the branch here a little stronger. This week we will start English class to see if we can get to know a ton of people who live around the church and then convert their families : ) . . gotta be blunt right? . . that is why we are going to do the class! gotta run! Love you all!!

To All -
ALRIGHHHTY then!
I found a rock and stick in the street and using the little muscle I have left and the slighty knowledge I have about the power of leverage. . .
